    Zhao was born on 12th March, 1976, in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China, and grew up there with her older brother. Her father, Zhao Jiahai, is a senior engineer, and her mother, Wei Qiying, is a music teacher. Wei is the second child and only girl in their family, her older brother's name is Zhao Jian.

    After graduating from secondary school, Wei attended Anhui Normal University; she then studied Tibetan dance for 3 years. In 1996, she entered the School of Performing Arts of the Beijing Film Academy and graduated with a master's degree in 2009. In addition, Wei completed a master's degree in Directing from the university in 2006.

    Zhao Wei decided to become a star after filming A Soul Haunted By Painting (1994) as an extra. From here, she was greatly inspired by Gong Li's performance. Then, in 1994, she attended the Star Academy in Shanghai and successfully filmed Behind the Wall of Shame (1995) that year.

    Since 2008, Zhao has been identified as an A-list Box Office star in China thanks to the explosive success of several films; these include Painted Skin (2008), 14 Blades (2010), Love (2012), Lost in Hong Kong (2015), and Hollywood Adventures (2015).
