Vicki Zhao (known as Zhao Wei) is a popular Chinese actress, singer, businesswoman, and film producer. Winner of dozens of music awards and prestigious awards such as the Golden Eagle Awards Zhao made her debut in the media world with the film A Soul Haunted by Painting (1994). Her hits and famous appearances include Dearest (2014), Red Cliff, So Close (2002), Shaolin Soccer (2001), and others.

This popular businesswoman and celebrity ranked 7th on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list in 2015 and 22nd in 2014.

Education and Parents

Zhao was born on 12^th March, 1976, in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China, and grew up there with her older brother. Her father, Zhao Jiahai, is a senior engineer, and her mother, Wei Qiying, is a music teacher. Wei is the second child and only girl in their family, her older brother's name is Zhao Jian.

After graduating from secondary school, Wei attended Anhui Normal University; she then studied Tibetan dance for 3 years. In 1996, she entered the School of Performing Arts of the Beijing Film Academy and graduated with a master's degree in 2009. In addition, Wei completed a master's degree in Directing from the university in 2006.

Zhao Wei decided to become a star after filming A Soul Haunted By Painting (1994) as an extra. From here, she was greatly inspired by Gong Li's performance. Then, in 1994, she attended the Star Academy in Shanghai and successfully filmed Behind the Wall of Shame (1995) that year.

Since 2008, Zhao has been identified as an A-list Box Office star in China thanks to the explosive success of several films; these include Painted Skin (2008), 14 Blades (2010), Love (2012), Lost in Hong Kong (2015), and Hollywood Adventures (2015).

In 2006, Zhao completed a Master of Arts (MFA) in Directing from the Beijing Film Academy. In 2013, She first directed the film So Young, a major success in her film-directing career. Then, in 2019, the movie ‘‘Brother’’ and in 2020, drama ‘‘Hear Her.’’

Zhao has won numerous awards and been nominated for many awards for her acting skills early in her media career. Her role as ‘Little Swallow’ in the TV series My Fair Princess (S01-S02) is considered one of the most eventful TV characters of the decade, for which she won the Golden Eagle Award. She won the Best Actress Award and the Shanghai Film Festival Golden Goblet Award for her role in A Time to Love (2005).

In 2021, Vicki Zhao's life took a dramatic turn. On August 27 of that year, all television dramas and films in which Zhao appeared were removed from iQiyi, Tencent Video, and various Chinese video streaming services. Her Weibo Super Talk was also deleted (except for her own Weibo accounts). However, no explanation has been given by the Chinese government on this matter.
